About
Pan bloglodytes is the official blog of the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute.
CHCI is home to Washoe, Tatu, Dar, and Loulis, four chimpanzees who use American Sign Language to communicate with one another and with their human caregivers. Washoe was the first non-human in history to acquire a human language. Learn more about Washoe and her family at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute website or at the Friends of Washoe website. Better yet, come and visit them yourself during one of our weekend Chimposiums.
Explaining the Name
We seem to have a tradition of using plays on words for things at CHCI -- think "Chimposium" and "Chimporium". Pan troglodytes is the species name for chimpanzee, and we simply could not resist the opportunity to play around with it for the blog: Pan bloglodytes was born.
